Deforestation has been a key cause of the decline in the number of orangutans in Indonesia. Bornean and Sumatran orangutans have become listed as critically endangered because the adults are generally killed by farmers on sight and the babies are sold into the black market as pets. Desi and Johnny were illegally sold and kept as pets when they were babies. Once found and confiscated, they had to be taught how to be wild again so that they could be released back into the wild.
